Instead, pick a color palette and style that you love, use Yelp to find local thrift stores and retailers to pick pieces to incorporate into your space,\u201d says Makk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bedding\u2014sheets in particular\u2014should be white and cotton. \u201cDark or plaid bedding screams \u201ccollege dorm room\u201d\u2014and can be very off putting, as can your Star Wars sheets,\u201d says Kristy Woodson Harvey, design expert and author of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kristywoodsonharvey.com\/secret-southern-charm\/\">The Secret to Southern Charm<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in bookstores this April. Silks and satins\u2026Just, no. Please no.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may sound obvious but keeping your\u00a0bedroom\u00a0clean and clutter-free is so important! \u201cFirst impressions are everything and you don\u2019t want to air your dirty laundry (literally!) when someone sees your home,\u201d says Woodson Harvey. Plastic laundry hampers are fine as long as they\u2019re hidden in the closet. If there\u2019s nowhere to hide the hamper, upgrade to a basket or natural fiber hamper. Plus, simple actions like making your bed every morning can be a wonderful boost for your frame of mind.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-997 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/bsgsite.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/kaori-aoshim-378190-unsplash-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"574\" height=\"863\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may be in love with your favorite down comforter, but that doesn&#8217;t mean you have to show it to the world. \u201cDuvet covers or coverlets with matching pillow shams can be inexpensive and add a finished feel to a\u00a0bedroom\u00a0while still being extremely simple to maintain,\u201d says Woodson Harvey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We all remember the pillow stabbing scene in\u00a0<em>Along Came Polly<\/em>. But a couple of accent pillows on a bed are a wonderful touch and make your\u00a0bedroom\u00a0feel like a grown up\u2019s. \u201cWhen in doubt, choose a neutral color. A white pillow sham with a monogram in a blue, tan or gray goes with everything,\u201d says Woodson Harvey. Guys, you can never go wrong with an Old English monogram\u2014it\u2019s dignified and gracious in or out of the South.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That overstuffed recliner crammed in the corner of your room was fine when you were in college. But, as a grownup, it\u2019s time to focus on scale and proportion. \u201cIf you have room for a chair (or a pair) in your\u00a0bedroom, that\u2019s fine, but they need to be the correct proportions for the space,\u201d says Woodson Harvey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have older furniture that looks a little dirty, tired or Duct taped and you can\u2019t replace it, slipcovers are a simple way to cover a multitude of sins. \u201cLook for varieties that you can pop in the washing machine, and stick with neutral colors,\u201d says Woodson Harvey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make an effort with accessories. \u201cA\u00a0bedroom\u00a0should be a clutter-free safe haven, sure.
